While India has been (Controversial) cases of even septuagenarians using in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to have children ( a 74 – year old woman from Andhra Pradesh gave birth to twins through IVF in 2019) the trend isn’t exactly mainstream , and it will take a while for it to be.
Dr.ShwetaGupta , Senior Consultant IVF at a Fertility Clinic Gaudium in Delhi, says, “Women see a gradual decline in egg reserves, after the age of 35 and more so post 40, they may need help with IVF to maximise their chances with their own egg or donor eggs.
In India,The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill, 2020 suggests ART Services can be commissioned in women upto 50 years.
Motherhood at 50 year is usually not recommended as with physiological changes at that Age and especially without Medical fitness assessment a pregnancy can be risky and dangerous one is at risk of Cardiovascular and other Medical and Obstetric problems with adverse neonatal outcomes.”
But she doesn’t rule out the possibility of it becoming a trend in the future- “more women in their 40s and a few has increased to 70s-80s, and there is a reasonably long period of time women spend active after 40 with the Socioeconomic changes today and women marrying late,pregnancies are being pushed back a later stage in life .
