AZADI KA MAHOTSAV-A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM

India got freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947. However  there were many sons of Mother India who sacrificed their lives to get this freedom. Our freedom fighters fought a long drawn battle to free our country from the clutches of Imperial rule. Incidents like the Jallianwala Bagh remain deeply entrenched in our memory. Who can forget the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. They are the immortal heroes of India. The Department of English took this opportunity to pay homage to our freedom fighters by conducting a poster making and story telling event in their honour on 22nd May 2021.

The title of poster making competition was “ My Perception of Freedom in India”.  Students had the opportunity to creatively express what freedom meant to them in the 21st century. The event was well attended by students who showcased their concerns on gender, corruption and  a secular India through their posters.  Manisha Vats, Nayanmooni Gogoi and Priyanka were the winners of the poster making competition.

The theme of the following activity of storytelling competition was “The Untold Story of Our National Heroes”.

Telling stories gives us a sense of culture, history, and personal identity. Storytelling passes on personal, historical, or cultural events or experiences so they transcend to shared experiences. Storytelling alters individuals, changing them into families, groups, communities, and even nations. Students gave an overwhelming tribute to our unsung heroes. Akanksha, Pritya and Gayatri emerged as winners of the story telling competition.

The event was conductedunder the patronage of our esteemed Chancellor , Dr Picheshwar Gadde. The inaugural address was given by Honorable VC, Dr A.R Dubey.  His thoughts on freedom during this trying time set the mood of the entire event. The department was also honored to have the presence of Dean Academics, Registrar and Deans from other departments as well. HODs of other departments too graced the occasion.  Associate Dean, Dr Anchal Mishra gave the welcome address. Her inspirational words were the core of both activities. Other team members Dr Priya Raghav, Dr Rashmi Maniar, Dr Hanan Khan and Ms Vandana Kaushik were there to oversee both the activities. Sandeep Kaul sir was present throughout the story telling competition. The event was a successful one and students participated in both the activities with full enthusiasm. The event was well attended and the true meaning of Azadi was brought home.
