Globally, 1 in 3 women have experienced lifetime physical and/or sexual violence, with the most common form being intimate partner violence. The physical and mental health consequences of these types of violence are substantial. Violence against women and children is a grave concern, with costs at multiple levels of society. Although violence is a threat to everyone, women and children are particularly susceptible to victimization because their rights are often overlooked and they often lack appropriate means of protection. In some societies, certain types of violence are considered socially or legally acceptable, thereby further contributing to the risk to women and children. Violence against women and children has tremendous costs to communities, nations and societies.
The Department of English took this opportunity to host a Webinar on Gender Sensitization. The object of this Webinar was to apprise all those who are associated with Lingaya’s about the need of gender sensitisation and why it is relevant.
The event was well attended by students which indicated their involvement in issues related to gender. Our keynote speakers were Professor Fauzia Khan from Jamia Millia Islamia and Dr Rashmi Maniar from Lingaya’s Vidyapeeth. Professor Fauzia set the mood for the webinar by stating how Women’s Rights were Human Rights and vice versa. She spoke at length about the issues surrounding Gender stereotypes. Dr Rashmi too enlightened us about how we can provide spaces for gender sensitization starting from our very homes. She focused on how the youth could be instrumental in bringing about changes in the society.
The event was conductedunder the patronage of our esteemed Chancellor , Dr Picheshwar Gadde. He pointed out how Lingaya’s group has always given equal opportunities to all it’s students whether male or female. He also spoke at length about how men and women both should share their social responsibilities equally. Honorable VC, Dr A.R Dubey commented on how women are making a difference in spheres previously delineated only to men. His thoughts on Gender during this trying time were well received.
